As a political refugee from Chile, who has achieved success after being tortured and imprisoned during the brutal regime of Augusto Pinochet, I’m often asked whether I’m happy to address groups of people. Over the years I’ve spoken on many occasions to a variety of organisations, and with my distinct accent, harrowing story, and motivational messages I’ve been well received.
Those I’ve talked to include inmates at the Wellington and Rimutaka prisons, those attending Wellington City Council forums, Community clubs and services assisting refugees rebuild their lives in New Zealand. What I say depends on whom I’m addressing but the theme invariably involves what I endured in Chile, how I battled to establish myself as a promoter, particularly in the sport of cycling, and what life skills I’ve acquired along the way. My story is the subject of a new book, Jorge Sandoval, Surviving Pinochet.
